I’m home from Bhakti Fest! (Photos and camping meal plans to follow.) It was an enlightening weekend because I was able to observe my reaction to a perplexing situation: I wanted to bolt, to drive home ASAP but I was responsible for staying through Sunday night. I felt claustrophobic, like I was going to die if I couldn’t leave the situation. Yes, that’s a bit dramatic… but feelings aren’t logical.

So I put some of Tara Brach’s teachings into play: I sat with feelings that I really wanted to run away from and I observed my wanting to leave, wanting to run away from uncomfortable or unfamiliar feelings. And I recalled times in my past when I felt similar and reacted by running instead of sitting with the feelings and observing my body’s reaction. And I recalled times I couldn’t run because the feelings were inside me, so I’d hurt myself. It was just another way to mask the situation. It was all very interesting to notice this about me.

I’m not sure I quite figured myself out or have the answer, but I stayed. And I’m still breathing.

This week I’m getting ready for Bhakti Fest in Madison — three full days of yoga, workshops, intensives and kirtan. I am volunteering in the First Aid for my ticket… hopefully I’ll get a chance to post what times I’ll be working and everybody can be very careful with their body during those hours!

Good Monday Morning! We visited my parents, a 5 hour drive west, over Father’s Day weekend… probably the fastest weekend this year!

My favorite running partner (my dad) and I went on a Saturday morning run, ate a breakfast of bacon and eggs and then my sister and parents joined me in a Gentle Yoga class at Inspiring Actions Yoga Studio. Afterwards, Dad headed back to work on his airplane with Elav, and my youngest sister joined us women in visiting the overflowing St Paul Farmers’ Market. Mom and I talked to Mary Falk, the Wisconsin “fish bait” cheese maker, who is one smart and knowledgable woman!

Saturday evening we packed a picnic, carted kayaks and a canoe with the four-wheeler and a trailer down to the boat launch, grilled out and ate a wonderful meal before taking the boats across the mighty St. Croix River. When we reached the other side, we pulled the boats up and climbed up the tree roots to walk the Afton State Park trail system. I’d love to take my backpack, portage my kayak and pretend I’m in the Boundary Waters some day. Or I could actually visit the Boundary Waters.

So. Here we are. Back in Menominee, MI. The weekends visiting my parents and siblings zip by so fast. And then we come home to our apartment and our jobs. I’m excited to get back to my yoga studio and all the possibilities I see in the future!

This past weekend I had my Grand Opening for The Yoga Place, a studio I opened in April in Menominee, MI. The turnout was great on Friday and Sunday, and Saturday we made it in the local paper! After a busy weekend, I’m looking forward to slowing down a little bit.

Hola from the Dominican Republic! Since I really don’t know what or where I’ll be partaking in meals, I’ve instead included a list of some foods I’ll be looking to try out. We are staying at an all inclusive, so I’m sure there will be plenty of “American” foods too.

Most of the foods tend toward starches and meats versus dairy and vegetables.

  • Arroz con dulce (rice pudding)
  • Mangú (mashed, boiled plantain)
  • Sanchocho (a stew made with seven varieties of meat)
  • Chicharrón (usually made of fried pork rinds)
  • Cassava (tapioca)
  • La Bandera, literally “the flag” (consists of white rice, beans, meat, vegetables and fritos verdes (green plantains or tostones))
  • Pasteles, although usually a Christmas dish (I think this will be similar to a Michigan pasty)
  • Tostones (toasted plantain)

Yikes! This post is getting a bit late for me!

This past weekend I was in Chicago for the National Restaurant Association (NRA) Show for Cabrio Companies, an innovative company that creates structures for restaurant patios with opening roof and door systems (check them out on facebook and twitter. Oh! And watch a video from our GoPro on YouTube). At the NRA Show, everything to do with restaurants is on display including kitchen equipement, decor, place settings, food trucks, shoe companies, waste companies, green companies, and… food companies. Like a good little taste tester, I made sure to try out as many new foods as possible.

So tomorrow begins a little detox, a little time for the good bacteria in my gut to take over again.
